Moving On

The two biggest problems I had when keeping chickens was coming up with enough cool chicken names and having enough land for them to pasture. A small group of chickens can happily graze every last bit of life from a small patch of earth down to the dirt in just a few days or less if you don’t move them on to fresh pasture. It’s a never-ending task, but it’s the best way to have healthy chickens and healthy pasture.

Sometimes life feels a bit like a piece of pasture that’s had every last bit of life pecked out of it. Every effort to forage something good during these times feels futile. The tireless efforts aren’t a sign of failure, it’s a sign of no longer fertile soil. Sometimes we just need fresh pasture. Sometimes we just need to move on.
