Boiling Over

boiling over

Angry people are like a pot of water on the verge of boiling over. Hot-tempered and hyper-agitated. They almost never cease to complain, compare, condemn, criticize, and call to attention every injustice in their life. You can tell they’re suffering, but attempting to help often ends up with someone getting burned. Sometimes multiple someones.

As a recovering angry person, I can tell you that the greatest reward of being angry was a swelled sense of entitlement. If someone didn’t like my anger, I gave them plenty of reasons as to why I was deserving of my anger. And if someone or something made me angry, I made they and others heard about it.

As a recovering angry person, I can tell you that the worst thing about anger is the guilt. I felt guilty for being angry all the time and I felt guilty for trying to make others feel guilty about my anger.

As a recovering angry person, I can tell you that the scariest thing about anger is misunderstanding your inner anger and feeling misunderstood by others about your anger.

As a recovering angry person, I can you that learning to manage anger is a lot like learning to cook. It takes lots of trial and error and a few disastrous experiences before you get the hang of it. And although you eventually learn to navigate your way through your thoughts and feelings somewhat successfully, there will inevitably be some boiling over and burning. Sometimes literally.
